But after much thinking (or indecisiveness), we have decided to give it away to a lucky reader/fan of GoingPlaces.sg.</p><p>So, if you have been to places that you think others would love to visit too, please share and the brand new Samsung camera could be yours.</p> ]]></content:encoded> <wfw:commentRss>http://www.goingplaces.sg/photo-contest-samsung-pl20-camera/feed/</wfw:commentRss> <slash:comments>0</slash:comments> </item> <item><title>Money Saving Tips On Phuket Transport</title><link>http://www.goingplaces.sg/money-saving-tips-phuket-transport/</link> <comments>http://www.goingplaces.sg/money-saving-tips-phuket-transport/#comments</comments> <pubDate>Sat, 05 May 2012 04:13:42 +0000</pubDate> <dc:creator>GoingPlaces</dc:creator> <category><![CDATA[Phuket]]></category> <category><![CDATA[Thailand]]></category> <category><![CDATA[Bus]]></category> <category><![CDATA[Patong]]></category> <category><![CDATA[Travel Tips]]></category><guid isPermaLink="false">http://www.goingplaces.sg/?p=1141</guid> <description><![CDATA[Friends had warned me about the exorbitant prices of taxis, mini buses &#038; tuk-tuk in Phuket. In Phuket, most (or rather all) transport operators have an unanimous consensus to standardize the prices of taxis and mini buses. From the airport, flocks of transport operators would approach you for their services and you could be overwhelmed by the choices.</p><p>In general, taxis and minibuses to Patong area would cost 600baht (USD19) and 150baht (USD5) respectively. Often, first-time visitors would &#8216;waste&#8217; time haggling prices with these operators. This is not necessary as it would merely be a waste of your precious vacation time. As Phuket is an area packed with tourists, the operators would not succumb to you just to get your business. So, here are the money-saving tips on getting around Phuket.</p><div class="adbox-336x280"><script type="text/javascript"><!--

//--></script><script type="text/javascript"
src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js"></script></div><h2>Phuket Transport Prices &#8211; Taxis, Buses &#038; Tuk-Tuk</h2><p><strong>Tip #1:</strong> Go to the first guy who approaches you but do not pay more than 600baht for a taxi and 150baht per person for minibus services respectively.</p><p><strong>Tip #2:</strong> Take the mini bus if you&#8217;re traveling alone or only with your partner. Typically, a minibus would take up to 10 passengers and waiting time is not more than 10-15 minutes. In my opinion, mini buses are generally newer and more comfortable than taxis. On top of this, if you&#8217;re lucky enough, you may just get to make some new friends on your minibus ride!</p><p><strong>Tip #3:</strong> At the airport, most operators would tell you that there is ONLY taxi services on your return trip to the airport and the return ride to airport would cost at least 700 to 1000 baht. Ironically, that was what my friend told me too. Many operators would provide you with their name cards to engage their service again, assuring you that the prices they quoted are the lowest in town and you are given a &#8216;one-time&#8217; special rate (which is absolute crap!). If you are &#8216;naive&#8217; (means stupid) enough, some operators may even coerce you to pay the return fares upfront. However, none of the above information is accurate. In fact, if you head to Patong, you can easily find &#8216;Travel Booths&#8217; that offer mini bus services at 150 baht per person to the Airport.</p><p><img src="http://cloudfront.goingplaces.sg/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/phuket_tuk_tuk.jpg" alt="Phuket Tuk Tuk" title="Phuket Tuk Tuk" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-1142" /><script type="text/javascript">/*<![CDATA[*/document.write("<div class='imgsource'>Source: <a href='http://www.flickr.com/photos/jasonteale/1067349756/'>Jason Teale/Flickr</a></div>");/*]]>*/</script><noscript>Source:Jason Teale/Flickr</noscript></p><p><strong>Tip #4:</strong> In Phuket, taxis, tuk tuk and motorbike services generally cost between 200 and 500 baht. Perhaps after some bargaining, motorbike services may cost a little cheaper (say 50 baht lesser). Thus, I would suggest walking around Phuket from places to places. From my experience, walking around Phuket gives you the chance to &#8216;bump&#8217; into interesting sights, people and even tasty road side stalls.</p><p>During my recent trip to Phuket, I walked around 10km a day with google map as my loyal companion. This way, I saved on the transport cost &#038; splurged on ice cool chilly beer when I hopped from one bar to another.</p><div class="adbox-336x280"><script type="text/javascript"><!--

src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js"></script></div><h2>Day 1 &#8211; Ubud Village Tour</h2><p>As many people choose to stay in Kuta and the surrounding area for their holidays, the tour starts and ends there. Beginning in the early morning, the destination for the day is Ubud, which lays towards the north. Along the way though, there is a great deal to see and do.</p><p>The first stop is at Batubulan Village, which is famous for the Barong and Keris dances that are performed here. The village is a cultural centre, and provides an insight into past traditions. From there, the route would take in the villages of Celuk and Mas which are renowned for their gold working and woodcarving respectively. The quality of Balinese wood products from furniture down to artistic idols is rightly world famous, and tourists who have plans to buy items to be sent home would do well to spend some time in Mas.</p><p>Other stops along the way to Ubud would then take in views of lakes and mountains, passing by rice terraces and temples. There are a fine selection of hotels in Ubud to stay the night in, and a number of quality restaurants to eat in. Ubud is also an excellent place to experience a unique Balinese spa, and the 90 minute “Mandi Lulur” body scrub available at Zen is the perfect way to unwind before heading to bed.</p><h2>Day 2 &#8211; Balinese Traditional Village, Penglipuran</h2><p>The next morning, head toward Amed on the north east coast. As with the day before, there are a number of interesting stops along the way that reveal a little more of the character of both the people and the island.</p><p>The first stop is made at Penglipuran Village, which is a good example of a traditional Balinese compound. Here, one will discover how and why houses are orientated in certain directions, how livestock is kept and many more things.</p><p>Other stops include the temple at Besakih and the Gua Lawah (bat cave) before finally arriving in Amed, where one can stay the night in a range of hotels. At night, the restaurants serve some of the best seafood to be tasted anywhere in the world, which is made all the better by the laid back atmosphere.</p><p><img src="http://cloudfront.goingplaces.sg/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/amed_bali_dive_tour.jpg" alt="Amed Bali Dive Tour" title="Amed Bali Dive Tour" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-1125" /><script type="text/javascript">/*<![CDATA[*/document.write("<div class='imgsource'>Source: <a href='http://www.flickr.com/photos/berndhoppe/4304722533/'>Divemecressi/Flickr</a></div>");/*]]>*/</script><noscript>Source:Divemecressi/Flickr</noscript></p><h2>Day 3 &#8211; Eco Dive at Bali Amed</h2><p>After breakfast, it is recommended to spend some time snorkeling, swimming and diving in the waters around Amed. The area is truly stunning, and in particular, scuba divers will enjoy their time here. Perhaps after lunch, you could continue to explore the Lovina Beach, taking in some attractions such as the Sangsit temple along the way. Lovina is situated at the north of the island on the coast, and there are a number of hotels here to spend the night at.</p><p><img src="http://cloudfront.goingplaces.sg/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/lovina_dolphin_tour.jpg" alt="Lovina Dolphin Tour" title="Lovina Dolphin Tour" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-1126" /><script type="text/javascript">/*<![CDATA[*/document.write("<div class='imgsource'>Source: <a href='http://www.flickr.com/photos/robinhoypaco/4421914695/'>Robinho Y Paco/Flickr</a></div>");/*]]>*/</script><noscript>Source:Robinho Y Paco/Flickr</noscript></p><h2>Day 4 &#8211; Lovina Dolphin Tour &#038; Tanah Lot</h2><p>Its time to get up early and the early rise will be duly rewarded with a boat trip out to see the dolphins in a wooden boat. Every morning, they gather, and the sight of the sunrise combined with the dolphins leaping out of the water and feeding is an experience of a lifetime.</p><p>After returning to the hotel and having breakfast, it is then time to head south back to the Kuta area. So, it&#8217;s a perfect place to buy some souvenirs to take back home.</p><p>Go to the All-You-Can-Eat restaurant &#8211; Cheng Long Kung Kata for dinner at 98 baht per person but be warned, if you do not empty your plate, the price costs double. It is not polite to waste food. This restaurant is located on Wichitsongkram road, just before Central, on the corner of the road to Big C shopping mall.</p><p><img src="http://cloudfront.goingplaces.sg/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/laem_sing_beach_phuket.jpg" alt="Laem Sing Beach Phuket" title="Laem Sing Beach Phuket" width="400" height="267" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-1088" /><script type="text/javascript">/*<![CDATA[*/document.write("<div class='imgsource'>Source: <a href='http://www.flickr.com/photos/johnlembo/2392162695/'>John DL/Flickr</a></div>");/*]]>*/</script><noscript>Source:John DL/Flickr</noscript></p><h2>Day 4 &#8211; Karon Beach and Laem Sing Beach</h2><p>Rent a motorbike to get to the amazing Karon Beach and Laem Sing Beach. Karon beach is situated between Patong and Kata Beach and it is a relatively busy beach. Laem Sing Beach, on the other hand, is known as a hidden-gem, popular among the local.</p><p>Riding a motorbike is the cheapest and most exciting way to get around Karon. Visit Dinos Park Mini Golf, an extraordinary prehistoric-themed mini golf course. Afterwards, head over to the Mantra Herbal steam Sauna and Spa for a relaxing sauna session.</p><p>Go to Angus O&#8217;Tool&#8217;s Irish Pub &#038; Restaurant for a world-class meal that you will never forget.
