Last week, I had to travel to Guilin, China, to attend a business conference. I was deciding whether to stay at the Shangri-La Guilin Hotel or the Sheraton Guilin Hotel and finally decided on the former.
Shangri-la Guilin – A Business Traveler Review
The first thing that greeted me when arriving at the hotel was the magnificent Chinese pavilion architecture. I was totally impressed! And it turns out that the 5-night stay at Shangrila Guilin hotel was one of my best, if not the best hotel I’d ever stayed.
Shangri-La Guilin known as Guilin Shangri-La Hotel in Chinese – 桂林香格里拉大酒店 – is located just beside the famous Li Jiang River (漓江). The hotel is 45 minutes taxi-ride from the airport and the fare is between RMB$110 – RMB$130 per way. I would strongly recommend staying at the Deluxe River View room from the 4th floor onwards. These rooms allow a sweeping view of the majestic Li Jiang River which you can enjoy both the sunset and sunrise.
Free Wifi/Cable Internet & Universal Power Socket
The room comes with complimentary internet access which is accessible via WiFi or cable (provided). Travelers need not bring travel power adaptors when they stay in Guilin Shangri-la hotel as they have a universal power socket. I find this really thoughtful!
I was expecting a local LCD brand TV but I was amazed to see a sleek looking Samsung LCD TV in the room! The TV comes with a lot of international channels like CNN, AXN, National Geographic, Channelnewsasia, TVB, etc.
Friendly Helpful Staff and Great Service
Their service staff are always smiling, friendly and ever helpful. Although they may speak English haltingly, they try their best to understand you and solve your problem. Another subtlety is the hotel has a scent that is definitely Asian in its lobbies, corridors and even the lifts. This scent is very exquisite and I detected a tinge of sandalwood which is one of my favorite!
Hotel facilities are the usual outdoor swimming pool, restaurants (including their signature Shang Palace – 香宫), bars, etc. I’ve used their sauna’s facility and am really overwhelmed by its size, cleanliness and grandeur.
Overall, staying in Guilin’s Shangri-La hotel has been a relaxing and rewarding experience. I’m definitely a Shangrila hotel convert and am looking forward to staying at other Shangrila hotels!
