Climbing Mount Batur for a spectacular sunrise or relaxing in a cottage at Lake Batur are not for the average Bali tourists who thronged the streets of Kuta or Tanah Lot viewing platform.
Lake Batur is the widest lake in Bali and lies between two active volcanos, Mount Batur and Mount Agung. Due to its higher altitude, the temperature around the lake is cooler than Kuta and Ubud. The journey from Bali international airport to Lake Batur is about 70km or 1.5 hours by car.
Mount Batur Trekking
Mount Batur is an active volcano at 1,717m. An average hiker will take about 1.5 – 2 hours to get to the top. The hike is not difficult except for the waking up at 4.30am in pitch darkness and walking on some paths with uneven lava rocks.
Things to bring along will be hiking shoes, wind-breaker, torch light, water and light snack. Walking sticks and gloves are provided by the guide.
At the top of Mount Batur, you get to see the excellent view of the Mount Agung (3,142m) which is the highest mountain in Bali. On a good day, you may even see the majestic Mount Rinjani on the neighbouring Lombok Island.
The fee for Mount Batur Sunrise Trekking is around USD40-50 per person. The package includes pick-up from hotel, accompanied by experienced trekking guide, packed breakfast and return to hotel. Do hassle for a discount if you book the trekking package from the hotel you stay.
Lake Batur Accommodation
Accommodation near Lake Batur, Bali are easily available and cater to travelers with different budget range.
